Russett near Laurel, Maryland in Maryland CityRussett is a large community of townhomes, condominiums, apartments and single-family homes located adjacent to Route 198 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. Construction began on Russett in the 1990's and continues to grow along it's northern boundaries. Unlike many newer communities, Russett was built in a way that retained many of the existing trees, making it an aesthetically pleasing neighborhood. View the Russett area with this interactive map. Shopping closest to Russett is provided by the adjacent Wal-Mart/Sam's Club complex and the Corridor Marketplace shopping center on the opposite side of Route 198. Corridor Marketplace includes a Target, Kohl's, Weis Market and several smaller stores. A collection of chain eateries can be found in the parking lot.
The most interesting geographical aspect of Russett is the Oxbow Nature Preserve. This "oxbow lake" is a remnant of an early path of a branch of the Patuxent River. The lake and the surrounding preserve lands provide a significant home for waterfowl and other animals. The developers of Russett worked with the Nature Conservancy to create the preserve. Access to the preserve can be found on the appropriately named Oxbow Place.
