Hippodrome Theater

The Hippodrome Theater, part of the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center, is one of the latest cultural additions to Baltimore's Inner Harbor. The Hippodrome brings an extensive series of plays and musical events to Baltimore.
The Hippodrome Theater originally opened in 1914 and showed movies as well as vaudeville performances. In the 1930's the theater was considered a major stop on the vaudeville circuit, attracting such performers as Bob Hope, Jack Benny Frank Sinatra and Benny Goodman. The last stage shows at the Hippodrome occurred in 1959 and the theater was used exclusively for movies until it closed in 1990. It was extensively renovated and combined with several neighboring buildings to become the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center, which opened in early 2004. The Arts Center is operated by the non-profit Hippodrome Foundation.
